Two worlds

March 16,2013
Have had the great good fortune to stay with a lovely US family of expats on assignment in Laos. Four bright and energetic kids and parents warm and welcoming, air conditioned house, better wifi and pasta for dinner.

Then there is Vientiane: expensive tuk-tuks (because petrol is over $4/gal, like everywhere in SEA), another currency to get used to, more old temples to visit,

Pretty Lao shop girls in silk Lao passions with metallic embroidered hems, spicy street food, and scantily clad western tourists down town. There is also a breezy river walk, but no shade. From all the capitals I've visited this is the calmest, and with a unique way to deal with traffic - a police escort with sirens and lights gets everyone else on the road to move over. Other than that they don't drive with their horns as much as elsewhere.
And sadly the man I was to meet here, Sombath Somphone is still not found. Please google his name and consider writing letters on his behalf.
