There are eight day figures (Wednesday has an am and a pm for the "nats" who like even number). People born on that day pour water on the images, one cup for each year of their lives. I couldn't figure out my birth day, so I just watched.

People everywhere are praying and making offerings, monks are chanting, tourists like me are taking photos. Its a rather "anything goes" kind of place, as long as you take your shoes off.

Until elections in 2010, this corner of the platform was cordoned off by the military regime. This obelisk in four languages honors the 11 students, who in 1920 met on this spot to organize a protest against the British. A ruling from Calcutta said only English can be used at the public Universities in Burma, not Burmese. This was the beginning of the movement for independence in Burma.
