Old Haunts

I'm reading the Viet Nam memoire "Catfish and Mandala"By Andrew X Pham. His family escaped to the US and he's back looking for his roots.
I went into Ubon today, the provincial capital of the province where I spent two years as a PCV. Standing on the bank of the Moon River behind the sparkling clean new market, gave me a rush of sadness, a sense of loss, loss of youth, of contact with friends who'd shared the experience, of the simplicity of life back then. It didn't last, it was surprising, and I felt very alone for the first time.

Colorful and clean smelling stalls still laiden with the abundance of the tropics.

No flies on the meat!!

At least its still in the same location, as are all the health and sanitation offices - prime river front property.
Nothing much in town to draw tourists except the candle celebration in July

A plaster replica stands in the city commons - a one time prison for Thai freedom fighters during the Japanese occupation of WW2

Buddhist Jona and the whale??

Big on details and symbolism
Later ate at wonderful Isaan Restaurant with sticky rice, laap and roasted fish, so tasty. Brought home naam because I was too full.
Now that I'm leaving tomorrow to stay with Jamlong, I have a slew of phone numbers of tuk tuks and taxis who will answer my call. No more walking the four kms to Prajuab's place

and to see her chickens

  2. Hey kathyrn,
it's Eric, the market looks like it carries a variety of yummy cheap foods. by the way, enjoying the solitude have its benefits sometimes. Protip: asian culture tends to thrive after sunset.

ps. Check your email! Doug is trying to reach you.
